Kobe is squeezed into a narrow strip between the sea and the mountains, so moving a few blocks north or south changes both the feel and the rent. The seaward side is commercial, the mountainside residential. Three parallel lines run to Osaka, so the commute is quick.

Okamoto岡本
A hillside student area around Konan University, known for its cafes and bakeries and a good safety reputation. Popular with students living alone.
